The ductwork in your home is one of its most important features. Ductwork acts as a sort of circulatory system for your heating and cooling systems, directing and moving warm or cool air to the various parts of your house. It’s very important that your ducts are performing well, otherwise you could experience ineffective heating and cooling or poor indoor air quality. Here are some ways you can check to see if it’s time to update your home’s ductwork:
- Consider the age of the ductwork. If you know how old your system is, that’s a good starting point in deciding whether it’s time to update or not. Most ductwork systems have a lifespan of around 10 to 15 years, so if yours is older than that, it’s likely time to make some repairs or replace the system entirely.
- Check over-exposed areas of your system. While much of your ductwork system is hidden within the walls and ceiling of your home, crawl spaces or attics usually have some visible components. Check these areas to see what condition the ducts are in, looking for holes, cracks, or disjointed sections.
- Examine the air flow in each room. A ductwork system that needs updating probably isn’t pushing out air like it should. While the heat or AC is running, go into each room and inspect the air flow coming from the vents. If it’s not blowing out adequate or there are temperature irregularities, this could be a sign that your system needs work.
- Call an HVAC company to set up a duct blower test. A duct blower test can tell you precisely how much air is leaking through your duct system, which will determine whether repairs or replacement are in order.
