You may have come to expect the start of Arizona thunderstorm (or monsoon) season, but what did you actually do to prepare this year? If the answer is nothing, your entire HVAC system could be in trouble. It takes a beating during the season every single year, but there are things you can do to make sure it can withstand the weather. These tips can help:
- Find an HVAC contractor you love immediately. If a particularly bad system hits and something goes wrong, the last thing you want to do is search for the right contractor from the screen of your phone while your power is gone. Get a licensed contractor that you like right now, and add their number to your phone.
- Make sure there are no tree limbs that can fall on your outdoor unit. If there are, trim them back because the harsh winds and rains are likely to cause several limbs to fall.
- Consider surge protection. Those little surge protectors aren’t going to protect your A/C unit from big fluctuations when lightning strikes or the power lines go down. Only a whole house surge protector can do that, so consider installing one to protect absolutely everything in your home.
- Get the ducts sealed. Dust is just part of the equation in Arizona, and when a storm rolls in, it’s going to come in your home if your ducts aren’t properly sealed. It’s going to get blown through your home, and it can also clog up your entire HVAC system, which can later create some fairly serious problems. Sealing them before the storm hits is a must.
