Your choice of thermostat can make or break your heating or air conditioning system.

A top of the line air conditioning or heating system might not be performing to its full potential without a modern, ‘smart’ thermostat to control it. Older systems are even more in need of the efficiency boost that modern thermostats can provide.

What types of thermostats are available?

Basic, ‘old-fashioned’ thermostats do little more than keep a steady temperature, while never ones can fine-tune the temperature in different zones of your home and can be operated remotely with your smart phone.

Here are the three basic types:

Non-programmable thermostats

Nothing fancy here. You set the temperature manually, and it holds that temperature until you change it. No timers, no features and poor efficiency.

How do non-programmable thermostats work?

Depending on its age a thermostat might even be analogue, but most are digital. It consists of a thermometer that detects the temperature of the air at one place in your home. It has just enough processing power to turn your heating or cooling on or off when it gets above or below that temperature.

Programmable thermostats

Programmable thermostats are a definite step up from non-programmable. They allow you to set different temperatures for evenings, weekends, etc. As a result, they tend to make your heating and cooling less expensive to run, and a bit more comfortable.

Energy Star estimates that a programmable thermostat will save you $180 every year compared to a non-programmable unit.

How do programmable thermostats work?

Well, at the very least, it includes a clock and a very minimal calendar application. This lets you set different instructions for each day of the week, and for different times of the day. Thus it can keep the house from getting too terribly hot during the day on weekdays when no one is home, but cool it down to really comfortable temperatures by mid or late afternoon. By comparison, most users would set it to keep the house cool all weekend long.

Smart thermostats

Smart thermostats are a lot more than just upgraded programmable thermostats. They connect to your phone, tablet, or any other internet capable device. This not only gives you extremely detailed programming options, it lets you override the programs with a touch, combining the ultimate in efficiency with the best possible comfort performance.

Some will even remind you when to change your filters or to schedule regular maintenance.

How do smart thermostats work?

Smart thermostats are fully computers in their own right. They connect to the internet via your Wi-Fi to an app you run on your phone or even your home PC. The connection is encrypted and professionally secured, and you can access it from anywhere in the world, or right from your sofa.
